critical review: Masters of Origami

Many people think of origami as nothing more than children’s pastime, but I learned that origami could be sophisticated fine art. I attended a unique International exhibition called Masters of Origami at the Pendulum Gallery, which was on until November 17th. As I entered the gallery, I could see many pedestals and temporary walls for the installation of the art works made by artists from around the world. Also, the list of participating artists’ names, background information on the curator/artist Joseph Wu, and history of origami was illustrated on two panels at the entrance. These panels at the entrance explained that Joseph Wu is a member of Paper-folders Around the Lower Mainland (PALM). He also teaches at origami conferences in many countries, and facilitates communications between origami enthusiasts on the Internet. He started folding papers at the age of three, and now noted for combining artistic merit with technical achievement, mythical beings are his favorite subject to create. The history of origami was useful for people like me, who did not have any knowledge of origami. The panel suggested the origins of the origami, the origin of the name origami, a bit of information of Yoshizawa Akira, the grandmaster of creative paper folding, and how we are now in the Renaissance of origami with the newest and most exciting works being produced.
There was vast range of origami artwork. The level of simplicity or complexity varied, as well as color and subject matter. Also, artists used different textured paper for different projects. Some pieces were very cute and a bit typical of origami, while some were elaborate and very life-like and/or sculpture-like.
Lord of the Rings series by Eric Joisel was one of my favorites in this exhibition. These three characters were made out of thicker off-white paper. It blows my mind how much detail and information is shown even if there were no color and other materials used. Red-eyed Frog by Bernie Peyton had a very different quality from Lord of the Rings. This artwork was based on more realistic subject matter, while Lord of the Rings was a creation of mystic characters. Although the large green surface is rectangular, it is folded to create the illusion of depth of a leaf. The frog on top of it looked as if it would leap off any second. Red-eyed Frog seemed relatively less complicated, but it had as much effect as any other work in the exhibition in terms of fine art value.

I think the use of the gallery space was successful. The flowing atmosphere created by people freely walking around the installations seemed to mimic the artists’ flow of thoughts and constant creativity. It was not an intimidating environment, so I think more variety of people were able to get the most out of the exhibition. Masters of Origami was somewhat invigorating, because when many people, including myself, think ‘art exhibition’, they think paintings or sculptures, not origami. I very much appreciated and admired the passion, patience, time and creativeness that the artists would have put into their amazing artwork. The craftsmanship was incredible. I’m sure that all the old and young men and women who visited the exhibition were also very impressed.
